Cannabis Glossary 2026: 60 Terms Every Consumer Should Know

A–C
Bioavailability: The percentage of a consumed substance that actually enters the bloodstream and produces an active effect. Inhaled cannabis has high bioavailability (50–60%); edibles have much lower bioavailability (6–20%).
Budder: A cannabis concentrate with a smooth, creamy texture created by whipping extract during production. Similar to wax but smoother.
Cannabinoid: Any compound that interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system. Cannabis contains over 100 cannabinoids including THCa, THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, and more.
Cannabis sativa: The plant species from which all cannabis and hemp products are derived. Both hemp and marijuana are Cannabis sativa — distinguished only by legal definition based on Delta-9 THC content.
Caryophyllene: The only terpene known to also act as a cannabinoid, activating CB2 receptors. Found abundantly in black pepper and many cannabis strains. Associated with stress relief and anti-inflammatory effects.
CB1 Receptor: Cannabinoid receptor found primarily in the brain and central nervous system. THC’s psychoactive effects come primarily from its interaction with CB1 receptors.
CB2 Receptor: Cannabinoid receptor found throughout the immune system and peripheral tissues. More associated with anti-inflammatory effects than psychoactive ones.
CBD (Cannabidiol): Non-psychoactive cannabinoid with extensive research interest. Does not produce intoxication. Available in hemp products legally nationwide.
CBG (Cannabigerol): The “mother cannabinoid” from which THCa and CBD are biosynthesized. Non-psychoactive; research suggests focus-enhancing and anti-inflammatory properties.
CBN (Cannabinol): A mildly psychoactive cannabinoid formed when THC degrades. Often associated with sedative effects. Higher in older or improperly stored cannabis.
Certificate of Analysis (COA): Third-party lab report certifying a product’s cannabinoid content, terpene profile, and safety testing results. Essential for any cannabis purchase.
Concentrate: Any cannabis product that has been processed to remove plant material, leaving a potent extract. Includes wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, distillate, and diamonds.
Curing: The post-harvest process of slowly drying cannabis in controlled humidity conditions to develop flavor, smoothness, and preserve cannabinoids.

Decarboxylation (“Decarb”): The chemical process of applying heat to convert THCa into psychoactive Delta-9 THC. Happens automatically when cannabis is smoked or vaporized.
Delta-8 THC: A minor cannabinoid with milder psychoactive effects than Delta-9 THC. Commercially produced through chemical conversion from CBD. Legal in some states, banned in others.
Delta-9 THC: The primary psychoactive compound in cannabis. Federally Schedule I. Produced naturally when THCa is heated.
Diamonds: Pure THCa crystalline formed through a separation process during cannabis extraction. Can reach 99%+ purity. Used in “diamonds and sauce” products.
